What moves a number, and what does not
Buyers learn to discount quickly and specification slowly, and it shows in the questions they ask. Some changes are cosmetic and some are structural, and treating them the same wastes weeks.
Quantity. The largest single lever on a per-unit figure. Setup per unit falls, machine time is better used, and materials can be bought against a planned run. It does not change the garment specification or the decoration method, so nothing about the item is being compromised, which is why the break is genuine.
Colour count and positions. Structural on screen printing, close to neutral on digital printing and embroidery. Moving from two colours to six on a screen-printed order adds stencils and press passes; the same move on a digital order adds almost nothing. This is why method should be chosen on artwork and quantity together.
Artwork readiness. A production-ready file removes a preparation charge and removes the risk of a substitution. Leaving artwork loose does not make the quote cheaper; it makes it provisional.
Fabric and weight specification. Structural and mostly irreducible. Moving from a mid-weight to a heavier fabric changes the material cost, possibly the decoration process and certainly the hand feel of the finished item.
Delivery. Changes the total without changing the product. A buyer who compares two quotations without reading the delivery term is comparing two different transactions.
Deadline. Changes lead time and sometimes cost, because compressed schedules displace other work and may force a different production route. It is a legitimate cost driver and it should appear as a stated assumption rather than as a surprise on the invoice.
What does not move a number: the buyer’s company name, the name of the event, or how senior the person asking is. What moves a number quietly and is often overlooked: the size breakdown, the number of colours in the garment as supplied, the number of destination labels on the cartons, and whether packaging is single, five or twenty units per box.
