Step 1: Reference Pantone PMS coordinates (3 minutes)
Brand book lists Pantone codes. Use Pantone+ PMS Coated for coated paper, Pantone+ PMS Uncoated for uncoated paper, Pantone TCX for textiles.
Step 2: Calibrate your monitor (if previewing) (10 minutes)
Use SpyderX or i1Display Pro hardware calibrator. Verify monitor shows colors accurately. Untrusted monitor preview is meaningless.
Step 3: Send Pantone codes to vendor (1 minute)
Specify in writing: 'Logo color: PMS 186 C, secondary: PMS 425 U, etc.' — not 'red' or 'navy' or hex values.
Step 4: Request strike-off sample (2-4 working days)
Vendor produces sample with Pantone match. Provided to you for inspection.
Step 5: Inspect under D65 illuminant (5 minutes)
Use D65 standard daylight (Northern light or D65 lightbox) to view sample alongside Pantone fan. Don't inspect under fluorescent or warm light.
Step 6: Measure Delta-E if critical (5 minutes)
For brand-critical projects: vendor provides Delta-E measurement. ΔE ≤ 2.5 = pass. ΔE > 5 = re-mix needed.
Step 7: Approve in writing (1 minute)
Email vendor with photo + statement: 'Approved — proceed with serial production using Pantone XX C as confirmed in strike-off.' Production starts immediately.
