Branded socks: fibres, knit construction and the choices that decide cost
The first decision a buyer makes is the fibre blend, because it dictates the knit gauge, the recovery after washing, the warmth, the breathability, and the cost. Combed cotton in the 80 to 85 per cent band, with a polyamide core for shape retention and a small elastane band for stretch, is the workhorse of the B2B range: soft, machine-washable, breathable, and inexpensive enough to be handed out at large event programmes. A Pantone reference printed as yarn is a colour request to the mill, not a colour match against the printed swatch, and the buyer should be told that fibre-dyed yarn shades shift between dye lots in a way that ink-on-paper does not. Merino wool in the 60 to 80 per cent band sits one tier above: warmer, naturally odour-resistant, and the right pick for outdoor teams, winter city wear, and hospitality suites that want a softer retail feel. Merino programmes are usually smaller in volume but higher in per-unit value. Performance and athletic socks are a separate construction: a cushioned terry loop under the foot, a tighter arch band, a reinforced heel and toe, and a mesh knit on the upper for ventilation. They take a polyester or polyamide face with elastane, and they are the right pick for sportswear brands, gym rollouts, and running event giveaways. Compression socks — graduated knit with a tighter ankle and a looser calf — are a niche that follows the medical and travel markets rather than the casual wardrobe. Recycled cotton and recycled polyester blends are growing quickly because brand and procurement teams now write sustainability into the brief; the recycled yarn carries a small price premium but reads cleanly in a corporate responsibility report. Two procurement points matter more than buyers expect. First, knit gauge: a finer gauge sock takes more stitches per centimetre, more yarn, and more production time, and the gauge is part of the unit cost. Second, sizing and grading: an adult sock programme usually runs in two or three size grades (S-M, L-XL, or a unisex medium), and the buyer should confirm the size split at quote stage so the mill plans the right number of heels and toes. On pricing, indicative per-unit bands for Yerevan-delivered runs run from roughly 2 100 AMD for a single-jacquard cotton crew sock at 500 units to about 9 800 AMD for a cushioned terry performance sock at 300 units; per-unit figures are quoted in AMD inclusive of 20% VAT and confirmed in writing before production.
