Lanyards and straps: decoration routes, hardware and the minimums that decide feasibility
Lanyards are made in four main constructions, and the construction decides the decoration route. Flat woven polyester in 15, 20, 25 or 30 mm is the default: a Jacquard loom weaves the logo into the fabric itself, which makes it the most durable option and the one that survives a year on a badge board without fuzzing. Tubular lanyards, made by knitting rather than weaving, are the premium soft-hand option and are usually ordered in black, navy or a single brand colour. Satin-printed lanyards carry a smooth, slightly glossy face and take a screen print cleanly. Dye-sublimation is the fourth and is the only route that delivers a full-colour photograph, gradient or multi-language lockup on a polyester ground; because the dye becomes part of the fibre, the mark does not crack, but it also cannot be reproduced on a dark ground without the image going cloudy, so buyers with a dark brand colour should be told that early. Screen printing on woven tape remains the cheapest route for one to six flat colours at 500 units and above. Colour control is the second real constraint: woven and sublimated lanyards are matched against a physical swatch rather than a Pantone reference, and a proofed ribbon is the only reliable way to approve a shade. Hardware is the third. A breakaway safety clasp is mandatory wherever children, medical patients or moving machinery are involved, and many corporate campuses adopt it house-wide for consistency. Beyond that the choice is between a plastic snap hook, a metal lobster hook, a steel carabiner and a badge reel, plus the badge holder itself — PVC at 0.3 to 0.8 mm for print-and-insert identity cards, or a sealed holder for RFID cards, where the sealed laminate is what stops the badge from reading at a distance. Minimum order quantities are what make or break a short-notice project: digital sublimation and screen printing start around 30 to 50 pieces, whereas woven production needs 100 to 300 because the loom setup is per colour and per pattern. Indicative AMD bands run about 1 900–2 900 AMD per unit for a 20 mm flat sublimated lanyard with a badge holder at 300 pieces, 2 600–4 000 AMD for a woven logo lanyard at 500 pieces, and 4 500–7 000 AMD for a premium silk or tubular option at 200 pieces, with breakaway clasps, metal carabiners and reels adding 600–1 800 AMD per unit.
