The base item and the function-first principle
The base item chosen was a 500-millilitre double-wall insulated stainless bottle. The function-first principle applied: a bottle holds coffee on the morning commute, water on a hike, tea at the desk, and the recipient uses it regardless of the brand mark. The choice settled three downstream decisions in one move: the design discipline (one mark, one location, one colour), the supplier shortlist (bottles are a stocked category with credible Yerevan and regional suppliers), and the personalisation model (laser engraving on stainless is durable, so the same item works for a generic cohort and a personalised cohort without two production runs). A stress ball, a foam coaster, a custom-shaped USB or a logo-centric mug would have been a worse base item, because each of those fails the function-first test for at least one of the three audiences.
