Step 1: Identify the substrate material (1 minute)
What's the product made of? Cotton, synthetic, polyester, hard goods (metal/ceramic/glass), leather, paper. This narrows printing methods immediately.
Step 2: Determine your quantity (1 minute)
<50 units → digital methods (DTG, DTF). 50-250 → silkscreen or UV. 250+ → silkscreen for cost. 1000+ → silkscreen always.
Step 3: Consider color complexity (2 minutes)
1-3 spot colors → silkscreen. Full CMYK photo → DTG (cotton) or sublimation (synthetic) or UV (hard). Many colors with low MOQ → DTF.
Step 4: Set durability target (1 minute)
50+ wash cycles → silkscreen, sublimation. Permanent → laser engraving. Premium tactile → embroidery, deboss/emboss.
Step 5: Match to budget (1 minute)
Lowest cost per unit → silkscreen, pad print. Premium → laser, embroidery, foil stamping. Mid → UV print, sublimation.
Step 6: Verify Pantone tolerance needed (1 minute)
Brand-critical (Delta-E ≤ 2.0) → silkscreen with paid setup. Standard (Delta-E ≤ 2.5) → all methods. Approximate OK → economy methods.
